OCTOBER 17,2011 – LOS ANGELES: The Organization of Black Screenwriters (OBS) was chosen as one of the partneringorganizations to nominate qualified candidates for the new Fox Diverse Writer'sProgram. In partnership with Film Independent, who will administer theinitiative, Fox has identified a select number of charitable organizationswhich have a history of fostering strong emerging talent from diversebackgrounds. The selection reflects theexpansion of OBS' reach and impact in the entertainment community. “OBSexists to support the development of qualified writers and it is collaborationslike this with Fox Writers’ Program that will enable us to reach this goal,” statedOBS President, Jennifer Williams.

The Fox Writer's Intensive("FWI") is a highly selective writer's initiative, held at the FoxStudios in Los Angeles, CA, from February 2012 through May 2012. The Intensiveis designed to introduce experienced writers with unique voices, backgrounds,life and professional experiences that reflect the diverse perspectives of theaudiences we create for to a wide range of Fox staff writers, showrunners,directors, screenwriters and creative executives. These collective individualswill work with the selected writers to build on both their general craft andthe business of writing for television, feature films and digital content withan added goal of creating a viable resource of experienced staffingopportunities.

We Want to See That Movie!

LOS ANGELES, CA - September 8, 2011- The Organization of Black Screenwriters (OBS) has finally made it through all the entries and we have our winner! Due to the extended contest deadline it took a bit longer than anticipated to judge, but we have finally completed our process and are happy to announce this year's OBS 2011 Log Line Contest Winners!!! We'll also read the winning log lines at our November OBS meeting (11/05/11 @10am), so make sure you check our website for location.

As a reminder the prizes for this competition are as follows:

The Grand Prize winner will get $400 CASH,The latest edition of Final Draft Screenwriting Software, a scholarship to the nearest OBS on Tour Workshop (transportation & lodging expenses not included) and Free entry into the 2011 OBS Original Script Contest and a shot at meetings with some of Hollywood's active producers. A prize value of $1,000!

Second Place will receive $100 CASH, a scholarship to a nearby OBS on Tour stop (travel & lodging expenses not included) in 2011. A prize value of $500!

OBS ON TOUR COMES TO AN END

We have just completed our 2010 OBS ON TOUR and it was awesome! We began with our kick-off in August with our meeting that featured special guest speakers Tananarive Due and Steve Barnes that lead to OBS On Tour LA. We want to say "Thank You" Tananarive and Steve for all the great information you provided us. We can't wait until the Jamaica Writers Retreat 2011 to really get in to it deeply.

August meeting was followed by two trips; one to New Orleans to participate on an entertainment panel for NBA Conference. The second trip was in early September, after the LA workshops, to the Congressional Black Caucus Conference in Washington, DC. I have to stop here to say thank you to William Marshall Jr. of MJT TV for providing excellent publicity coverage for the CBC Conference and our tours. MJT TV made sure every media outlet in the area knew OBS was in town.

OBS On Tour ~ LA was a series of six (6) classes, 2 nights per week for three weeks. Our main focus was feature film- High Concept, the films that get distribution deals. From there we hit the ground running, well the air running in September making a publicity stop at the Congressional Black Caucus Conference followed by OBS On Tour - New York/CNR-Rosa Parks Campus, DC/Howard University, VA/MABFF, & ATL/UMFF, which concluded this past weekend.

Special thanks to all of our guest speakers that provided Industry Insight from working experience and providing tools to assist writers in navigating the system as well as insight into pitfalls to avoid. In New York we had Tina Andrews, Warrington Hudlin, Craig T & Rosalyn Coleman Williams, and our own Excel Sharrieff. Thank you to Bridgett Michelle Lawrence for stepping in and providing valuable support for the team as in her membership capacity as well as transportation/tour coordinator. We also want to thank our New York host Dr. Barbara Adams and the staff of College of New Rochelle Rosa Parks Campus - they were fabulous.

From there we traveled to Washington, DC on the campus of Howard University. This time our special guests traveled with us from Hollywood; Ayanna Floyd, Supervising Producer of ABC's “Private Practice” and Kellie R. Griffin the writer/creator of the new show on BET “Reed Between the Lines” starring Traci Ellis Ross, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, & Robin Givens. Both ladies provided a virtual look inside the television writer's room for drama & comedy, respectively. We have to thank Ms. Aveta Addison, Program Coordinator Student Affairs @ Howard University. Ms. Addison made everything run smoothly making sure all students that had a desire were able to take advantage of the workshop.

For the first time Mid-Atlanta Black Film Festival held at the Crispus Attucks Theater hosted a screenwriter’s workshop and asked OBS On Tour to present it. With team OBS we were honored not only to present the workshop but also have Producer Monty Ross address our attendees along with our own Board of Directors member Michael Ajakwe Jr. and to host the directorial debut film from Director, Ted Lange, "For Love of Amy". We want to thank our host Gail Easely for welcoming us and making this workshop possible.

Finally, in Atlanta we were a part of UMFF hosted by Cheryle Reynolds. In Atlanta our special guest presenter was our own Sonya Steele, Chair of the WGA Black Committee, former OBS President & active member, and famed writer/creator of the awesome webseries “Celeste Bright”. Sonya presented the advanced segment of our workshop - Writing for Television.

Every tour received raved reviews including LA which had in attendance working directors and producers. The tour added a total of five more Writer's Groups including Baltimore, Harlem/Brooklyn, and additional groups in LA, DC, and Atlanta.

None of this would have been possible without our dynamic OBS On Tour Faculty and PR Team. I'd like to give special thanks to David Byrd, JaSheika James, Phyllis Banks, & Katrina Nelson the people on the ground that connected the dots from LA to DC - However, enough can't be said about David Byrd who sphere headed the DC leg for the second year in a row. I thank you so much for a great job.

And finally, but certainly not least is our illustrious faculty. Many of which wore multiple hats to present an informative workshop – Lisa Bolekaja, Rene Rawls, Tracy Grant, Ron Covington, Hilliard Guess, Kimberly Allen, & Teri Brown-Jackson.

Television: Does Having Black Actors in Front of the Camera, Translate to Black Writers in the Room?

Towards the end of 2008, and nearly all of 2009 Black shows disappeared from television. It wasn't even a slow demise, one day they were there and the next they were all gone.

No more shows like, Family Matters, Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Brandy, In the House, Living Single, Girlfriends, One On One, The Steve Harvey Show, The Parkers, Love, Inc., Eve, Fatherhood, Martin, For Your Love, Cuts, Between Brothers, Jamie Foxx Show, Brothers,

Sister, Sister, Moesha, Sparks, Out All Night, My Wife & Kids, Proud Family, Smart Guy, Roc, Malcolm & Eddie, Eve, The Game, Cosby, Bernie Mac, Everybody Hates Chris, Just Jordan, All Of Us, Half & Half, Second Time Around, Fresh Prince of Bel Aire, and Sherri -just to name a few.

Now there's an influx of shows that have Blacks in the ensemble cast, but nothing like those I just named are visible on television. Well, there's Grey's with four (4) from time to time and Shonda Rhimes as it's creator - she's also the creator of Private Practice - but the question remains, does that translate to Blacks in the room?

Why does that matter? First, there are many talented Black writers that have created shows with more in their arsenal as well as many undiscovered talent waiting to share their shows with the television viewing audience; but they need to get that in-house experience so they can then bring us their vision. Second, there's that authentic voice for the characters. The voice that sometimes only a Black person can bring. The one that rings true for their roots, their heritage, where they live, and their culture, the family dynamics.

At the end of 2010, with a Black President in Office, we still have ensemble cast, but also blacks as the lead characters in Undercovers & The Event on network television. Then there seems to be a trickle of the return of Black sitcoms with Are We There Yet (Ice Cube & Ali LeRoi) on cable; and coming are the return of The Game (Mara Brock Akil), Love That Girl (Bentley Kyle Evans & Stacey Evans Morgan), Reed Between the Lines (Kellie R. Griffin & Arthur Harris), & Let's Stay Together (Queen Latifah).

What do we have to do to bring back the numbers that existed in '80s & '90s? What do we have to do to see Black dramas? What will it take to get our Black Creatives working again? Are webisodes on the Internet our only answer?

The Organization of Black Screenwriters (OBS) is providing workshops for writers interested in the development of scripts for feature films, television programs and webisodes in a tour that touches down in several cities.
The tour kicks off at Harlem's College of New Rochelle (Sept. 24-25), then moves on to D.C.'s Howard University (Oct. 1-2), followed by the Mid-Atlantic Film Festival/Crispus Attacks Cultural Center in Norfolk, Va. (Oct. 7-8) and concluding at the Urban Media/Makers Film Festival in Atlanta, Ga. (Oct. 15-16).
Producer Warrington Hudlin (Boomerang) will be the guest speaker on Friday, Sept. 24, at the New York event.
"We have a comprehensive workshop program that takes writers from start to finish, from the idea concept to a completed script," says OBS President Jennifer Williams.

ORGANIZATION OF BLACK SCREENWRITERS DEBUT AT CONGRESSIONAL BLACK CAUCUS CONFERENCE

Group to Preview OBS On Tour Workshop Scheduled for Washington D.C.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles-based Organization of Black Screenwriters will preview its OBS On Tour workshop as a part of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Inc.’s 40th Annual Legislative Conference being held Sept. 15 – 18 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Led by OBS President Jennifer Williams, the organization will be a first-time exhibitor at the legislative event. OBS members will be on hand in the exhibitors pavilion to discuss the upcoming OBS On Tour workshop being held in Washington, D.C. in October at Howard University. Additionally, members will discuss a host of issues surrounding Hollywood and the need for development of African-American writers to create positive African-American images for the big and small screens.

“We are excited about the opportunity to participate in the CBC conference to meet our Congressional representatives up close and personal. We know many are as concerned as we are about the promotion of positive images of African-Americans in all forms of media and entertainment. OBS VIEWING PARTY FOR TREME!

Last night was the premiere of David Simon's "Treme" on HBO. Since I heard this project was in the works, I've been anticipating this premiere. Several members of OBS came together for a viewing party that was awesome. The evening would not have been complete without at least a Creole dish to accompany the viewing. So Sonya volunteered her culinary skills and prepared a Shrimp Gumbo and Lisa brought out the Wok and created a Scallop Pasta dish (well was sort of New Orleans) and would not have been complete without beer and wine! All of us being huge fans of "The Wire" couldn't wait to see hoe Treme would unfold. Adding the caveats of Khandi Alexander, Wendell Pierce, Clarke Pierce, Rob Brown, as well as, local favor of music by Uncle Lionel Baptiste, Benny Jones, Rebirth Brass Band, Kermit Ruffins, et. al.; the people of the city, New Orleans itself, were definitely a huge plus.

Being writers, we understand that it can be difficult to introduce a pilot and make it work. You never know if your vision will come across on the screen. Especially difficult at times is how to make certain you excite your audience, bring them into the story, get them to care about the characters without exposition, all within 90 minutes, in this case. All of us at the viewing party were well versed in the premise of the show; so we still had no clue of how it was going to play.

We were all impressed. David Mills did an excellent job. the unfolding of the story-flow worked while never downplaying the level of devastation the characters returned to

without sucking life out of us in the process, but allowing us to rejoice with them, empathize, share their pride, and feel their spirit --was realized. As I watched, seeing the landmarks, you understand that there is a culture within a culture ---with New Orleans sharing the spotlight with the music - its soul.

Now I can't end this without saying we did question one thing...at least the ladies in the room did. Steve Zahn. We opened with his butt! Come on, you could have given us a sexier butt than that! Besides, we could have used a sexier character period. I mean, Davis McAlary had nothing to offer a women like, Janet Desautel, which he was trying to impress. Davis is a little annoying but clearly loves New Orleans, the music, and the culture. but he could be sexier so we want to tolerate him and that we could believe that he could pull a woman like Janet. Steve Zahn really? Davis has no heat, no hot water, no money, an unattractive job, come on...really? Now if you had given us Harry Connick, Jr. as Davis, now that's sexy and tolerable! I'm just saying. LOL!

We're looking forward to the next episode, we can see a little heat coming.

I WRITE TO PLEASE...WHO?

There's so much on my mind when it comes to writing it's difficult to get it on the page. One of the things that keeps coming back is the question, as a writer what is your priority? What I mean is, do you write to tell the stories you always wanted to tell; the ones that are in your head, on your heart, that relate to your surroundings? Or do you tell the stories you think others want to hear? -The stories you think people will find acceptable.

Now, this is a question that has several parts and angles and I want to address it as such - so I'll start here.

Looking at the above questions as a screenwriter - being asked to adapt a novel and you do your best. Your best turns out to win you an Oscar, Geoffrey Fletcher, Best Adapted Screenplay. The first African-American to win this award, a triumphant feat for a job well done. The novel was written by Sapphire and is the compilation of her thoughts, experiences, surroundings, fantasies, and reflections of things she has seen or been told. If you read the novel, you know that it was a difficult read in many aspects, but still it was through the pen/mind of Sapphire the way she wanted us to see it. Later, someone came along, read it, and saw it as a challenge. They read a story so compelling that they were willing to take their money to bring it to life on the big screen. The characters were strong and complicated. To bring that to the screen required the actors to reach deep inside to places they didn't know exist with them them. However, they did it so well, Mo'Nique and Gabourey Sidibe, were both nominated and Mo'Nique won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress respectively. As well as, the vision of the screenplay, through the eyes of the director, Lee Daniels, who was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Director. As difficult as the story is to comprehend, it is still thought provoking and deserved to be told. I think Geoffrey did an extraordinary job in allowing us to get a glimpse of how twisted the characters were without totally grossing us out and Lee did an awesome job in bringing us the symmetry of the visual darkness; no windows, no friends, no role models, no fresh air, just their damp hovel.

All of the above to say that as late as yesterday, I was engaged in a debate as to how horrible the film was (the persons I was speaking with thought it was horrible NOT me). The participants questioned why the movie was made. why did the actresses, screenwriter, and director get nominated for such a film. why have the only Black people that received Oscars of late been those that have portrayed roles of undesirable characters. For the role Denzel Washington played in "Training Day" and Halle Berry played in "Monsters Ball"? My answer was simple - "...they deserved it." I had to question if this is really the question that should have been ask or if that was the reason they were so upset. But they blamed the screenwriter, the author, the director, the actor, and the actresses...

My question again, "Why Do We Write?" Do you write to tell the stories you always wanted to tell, the ones that are in your head, on your heart, that relate to your surroundings, Or do you tell the stories that you think other people want to hear? - The stories that people (Black people) will find acceptable.

SCREENWRITING CONTEST - IS THERE BIAS?

I’m trying to become a more visual and active blogger, but sometimes the schedule is so hectic I can’t find the time to sit and write. I really need to get that software that you can speak into and it types it for you; something for me to consider.

I’m really excited though and need to write, because this past few weeks has been amazing for inspiration. I attended the Screenwriters Lab Networking mixer and met some really cool people. OBSWG#1 has been meeting weekly for the past two weeks and we’ll meet again this Saturday, but the scripts we’ve reviewed have been incredible. Our discussion and feedback from everyone has been exceptional to say the least. I also meet with our new group OBSWG#9 and that was out there. We had projects that ranged from science fiction, family drama, to erotica! I was impressed. Can’t wait to see the new generation of screenwriters and television shows – these writers are remarkable. If you’re not already you need to attach yourself to a writers’ group.

Last night was another magnificent gathering of writers’ adding another dimension. As you know we’re into our “August is Animation” and Shawnee & Shawnelle Gibbs, Terence Anderson & Ajamu Frasier took it to another level. I want FLASH! WOW! The stories I could tell. It took me back to the erotica story. You can really push the envelope with animation. You should have been there.

Anyway, I’m sharing this because lately I’ve been getting lots of questions. A couple of days ago, this one came to me.

I received a question a few days ago regarding screenwriting contest. “Is it me or does anyone see that black screenwriting contest are as biased as white screenplay contest?”

I was puzzled and asked, what do you mean by bias? But then proceeded to answer the question this way… Judging at best is subjective at every level across professions and screenwriting contests are no different. I find that contests are bias, if you choose to use that term, according to what they're looking for. The OBS contest is looking to expose "new writers" to the Industry. OBS is giving winners an opportunity to take a meeting with studios/networks that are competing. The bias as I see it would be if you have a commercially viable script. Studios and networks are looking for numbers of butts you can put in the seats to watch their television show, or pay to see their movie. They are interested in how much money can I make if I produce this project.

I don’t see it as having much to do with whether it’s a black contest or a white contest as much as it has to do with the objective of the contest.

That’s the short answer.

Question screenwriters, how do you feel about it? Do you think there is bias in screenwriting contest? Do you think “race” is an issue, when it comes to who’s running the contest? I’d really like to know.

You've had an animated idea for years, but you never quite thought you could pull it off.
Well, think again! Creating your own animated content is easier than ever, and Shawnee' and Shawnelle Gibbs, web series creators and producers, will help you discover your inner-animator. This workshop will provide attendees with hands-on information on how an idea can go from page to stage with little to-know budget required.

Techniques Explored: Flash Animation, Traditional Hand-Drawn and Stop Motion

OBS members Shawnee Gibbs and Shawnelle Gibbs are an award-winning hybrid team with credits in writing, producing, and animation. They are the creators of the animated short film Ravishing Raspberry, and online animated series’ Adopted by Aliens and Old Ladies Driving, which have screened in film festivals across the country, as well as online, and television.

Shawnee and Shawnelle have been dubbed part of “The next generation of Filmmakers,” by The Oakland Tribune, highlighted in UVC Magazine’s, “Black Women Who Rock in Comics” issue, and have been featured filmmakers on BET.com. The Gibbs Sisters work in television during the day and are members of The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Producing credits include Emmy-Award winning Top Chef, Emmy-nominated Project Runway, as well as contributions to Disney’s Emmy-nominated Wizards of Waverly Place.

Summertime is the time for huge box office. Much of that box office is animated features. Therefore, OBS has solicited the partnership of Black in Animation &Visual Effects, (BAVFX) with some other special people to bring you the best information available to share with the OBS family.

Animation is one of the most vivid and lucrative forms of entertainment in today’s Industry. From Pixar and Disney to Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the Web, there are more outlets to distribute animated content than ever before. For those seeking entrée into this once highly exclusive career field, now is one of the best times to learn how to become a part of this successful genre and how to create content for it.

Our overall objective this month is to inform our members about writing for and creating animated content in today’s market. As writers, we are aware of animation, but many of us don’t know the first thing about writing for it—or what it takes to create and bring such projects to life. Join us in August for an in-depth exploration of Animation, an art-form Walt Disney once said, “can explain whatever the mind of man can conceive.” We’ll host our General Meeting on August 1st, followed by three (3) consecutive Wednesdays beginning August 12th, August 19th, & August 26th.

The Oscars - No, Not the Fashion!

Did you watch last night?

The Oscars, that is. I did. I was fortunate enough to have been invited to a wonderful Oscar Viewing Party @ The Independent Downtown Theater on Main Street. That theater is very nice. The seats were really comfortable considering; unlike watching at the movies for 2 hours max, I was sitting from approximately 5 pm – 9 pm.

The new format was very interesting. I enjoyed it, because it held your attention and kept you on your toes -- you didn’t know what would come next. I believe you can always change things and tweak as you go along. The real interesting change was the 5 presenters. It has potential, but what seemed to be missing from some of the praises for the nominees was the Presenters' sincerity. There were a few of them that I totally felt they truly believed what they were saying. But when a few stumbled reading the monitor, it gave it all away and made the entire thing feel a little plastic. I think this could really work if the presenters weren’t just previously nominated actors in this category, but rather actors that are close to the nominee. Then I think as one commentator explained; if it is the explanation of how they were nominated for the category; then each speech should contain those elements.

The performances were interesting – that’s all I got on that, interesting.

Now, Eddie Murphy presenting to Jerry Lewis, well he gave the connection – well the one they wanted you to believe, “One Nutty Professor to another.” So, explain John Legend singing Peter Gabriel’s song (for Wall-E), after he protested? Controversy? Umm... Let’s use a Black guy. I don’t know if Eddie Murphy was in the original plan, but I know John Legend wasn’t. Okay, that’s just my two cents.

What did you think of the new format?

Anyway, on my mind are of course the winners for “Best Screenplay” and “Best Adapted Screenplay”. Were you all shocked at all?

I must say I was quite happy and pleased with the winners. By each of them winning, I knew, at that very moment, that me standing on that stand one day is not far away. I also heard Hill Harper’s words ringing in my ears, “It all begins with the script…” I think that was very true for last night's winners. I believe many films being made rely too much on the “A” List Actor, putting butts in the seats, rather than focusing on the script. The story that must be told, the story that should be told must always come first, rather than the story that they glaze over with beautiful faces, well-known names, and hot bodies. It seems just having Brad Pitt didn't do it for the Academy voters this time. The 'down-on-your-luck', 'hit the rock bottom', comeback kid, didn't do it for them either.

I have stories to tell – real-life stories, fictionalized truths, and fiction. I have several scripts, too for both the big and small screen. Now it’s down to the polishing and making sure they’re ready.

Actually, I don’t think it’s far away for any OBS member or the many writers I’ve come to know over the past two years.

You have to just keep re-writing; then re-write, and re-write, and re-write!

AND THE OSCAR GOES TO…

WHAT FILM DO YOU THINK SHOULD WIN?

The day is almost here and there are Oscar parties planned everywhere. I happen to be attending the REEL Ladies Oscar Viewing Party @ Lola’s – you should join me. But when I accepted the invitation a incident came to mind. I’ll share…

Okay, so a few weeks ago I get invited to attend a screening of “The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons” @ WGA and of course there’s a Q&A to follow. I must say I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and did not at all feel the length.

I loved the premise and I thought Taraji P. Henson, as Queenie, was awesome. I was fasinated by the storyline, although there are those that say it was very much like “Forrest Gump” – but the interesting part to me is that I learned during the Q&A that the film was originally set in Baltimore – that got me to thinking -- to move the setting to New Orleans would have required quite a bit of re-write to make the characters fit the region and how they would relate to what was going on around them.

Another interesting point was that even though there was a mother/son relationship between Benjamin (Brad Pitt), and Queenie, there was great independence, a distance, if you will between the two characters also. Queenie seemed to have an understanding of who Benjamin was without knowing exactly who he was – and never curious as to where he came from. Queenie did show some traits of a southern mother, but it was stretched, for me. Benjamin never felt it odd or questioned that his mother was a different color; as he never felt it was too odd that he was old and growing younger -- that he questioned, but quietly accepted. And somehow the writer was able to sell it to the point the audience never thought it odd either, at least not the audience that I was viewing it with. I guess just “Curious” as the title indicates.

I have to admit, however, when Brad - OOPS! I mean Benjamin made it to the peak of his manhood (when he came of age), in that shirtless scene and the motorcycle scene; I was very happy! (Actually wanted to slap Angelina - but I came back, remembered it was Benjamin Buttons). ;-) Anyway, Benjamin was a very good looking man, better than Brad Pitt actually. But I digress...
I saw a few more things that left me with a couple of questions, but I’ll let it rest.

However, my question here relates to the “curious” question the audience was asked. Towards the end of the session the writer asked – “What is it about Slumdog Millionaire? I saw it, but I didn’t get it? Was it that good?” that was a bit funny to me and ”curious” – but then I saw it.

Both films have been nominated in the following categories:

Now, I didn’t understand that question until last night when I saw that last category.

OBS at the 17th Annual Pan African Film and Arts Festival

This year the Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) was held at the Culver Theatre in Culver City. On, 2/14/09 OBS held a workshop/ panel discussion titled:

“So, You Finished Your Script! Now What?”

This was a great, informative, and interactive discussion for aspiring filmmakers. It was exciting to see more than 80 people in attendance for this event. In case you missed it – check out the topics discussed:

“Quick & Dirty Loglines & Pitches” presented by: Lisa Bolekaja.
Talking about your film idea can be nerve-racking. Lisa suggested talking about your film as if it is already in the theaters, and to imagine you’re talking to your friends. This helps to relieve the nerves.

Another tip given was to have your logline and pitch memorized, instead of reading it off of a sheet of paper. Energy and delivery are keys to a good pitch meeting.

Lisa gave samples of quick logline templates, for example:
The Plot Driven Logline: (Title) is a (Genre) about (Protagonist) who must (Objective) or else (Dire thing will happen if Protagonist fails). Created by Max Adams, Writer
“The Screenwriter’s Survival Guide”.

After Lisa’s presentation, there was a discussion w/ Q&A with an industry panel that included presentation by the PGA, WGA, and Production Company. The OBS Industry Panel included, Charles Howard, Lamese Williams, Kellie Griffin, Rene Rawls, and David Wyatt, who all gave important tips. For example:

1) Writers, Re-write. Once you complete your screenplay let others critique it. A draft usually can have up to at least four re-writes before shopping it around.

2) Don’t be afraid to take low paying jobs to get your foot in the door, especially for television.

3) Have more than one plan of action: 1) enter scripts in contest 2) Query agents, managers, and production companies, 3) participate in industry events/network with others.

Word Power

Okay, so I’m watching television, I need to pay attention to how comedy and drama is crafted; so that means I wasn’t just watching but doing research. Anyway, while being a little nostalgic checking out “All Of Us” and it’s the episode entitled “Carmen’s Karma”; and as it ended I found myself so caught up, wanting more, and a little teary eyed…I know you say, she probably cries at anything, but you don’t know me like that…that’s not true! ;-)

It was at that moment it hit me how powerful the words of the screenwriter are…I mean seriously, I’ve always known it -- but this particular episode was so moving. It confirmed what I always knew. Writing carries a lot of responsibility and confirms the ability of the writer to totally bring people into their world, their vision. Arthur Harris did a great job at giving the actors just the right words to speak. Yes, actors have something to do with it because they have to bring it, but the writer gives them that direction. I’m excited and ready to go.

- PARTY PEOPLE STILL IN THE HOUSE!

If you missed this picnic you missed a great event! Everyone that came out had a magnificent time! The weather was wonderful and made for a beautiful day in the park. Special thanks to JaSheika James & Christy Lavalais for joining me in the early morning to stake out our space! Kim Allen too who came out and placed signs to make it easy to locate us! We celebrated family, we celebrated Quinn Jones’ birthday, we celebrated new friends, and we celebrated Corey Moore’s success @ the HBFF! We danced to the “Ole School” sounds spun by Jela! Man, Jela brought out the turntables, set up the speakers and took us on a journey that had everyone in the park on their feet at one time or another. And if they weren’t on their feet their heads were bobbin’! There was dancing in the seats, on the sidewalk, several Soul Train lines, and of course the ‘Electric Slide’ slid in, in several locations! Writers let their inhibitions disappear and let go to regenerate the creative side! If you weren’t there I’m not telling, but we have writers that really can ‘bust a move’! I’m sure you’ll see pictures show up in a few places.

However, Jela wouldn’t have been able to groove us if it had not been for one of our newest OBS members Michael Wolfe! We had no power and Michael, made a special trip back to Pasadena to get his generator to help get our party started! So a very special thanks to Jela Perry & Michael Wolfe for the collaboration in the Park! Michael also had the gaming tables set up with prizes and water guns for the kids! We were slapping bones, looking for a “Clue”, and declaring champions in a day long “Spades Tournament”.

Thank you to all the people that helped to make the picnic happen, to those faithful members that made a point to show, those new members that are excited about OBS, the veterans that want to see it keep moving, and those former members that have heard the rumblings in the street that OBS is on the move. We even had Samm Brown & Natoma Keir of Radio Station KPFK 90.7 "For the Record" along with filmmakers Tiara & Angela, who are working on a pilot set to start filming in July. Thank you all.

I think we finally left the park about 8 PM… But before the music we out, we all danced to “We Are Family… I Had OBS with Me!”(I stole that from Rene!) Everyone had a fantastic time. As we made our way to the parking lot, several people said; ”We have to do this again! Same time next year…And then I heard, I could do it next month!” Well, I don’t know about next month, but “Same time, next year sounds really cool!”

Again, thank you all it was a Blast!

INSTANT CONTACT AND RESPONSE? SERIOUSLY?

Yes is the age of instant contact and response. Everyone walks around with a cell phone that made pagers totally obsolete. With our cells we can answer a call almost anywhere…”Can you hear me now? --Good.” It almost seems as if there is no place off limits; I honestly feel that there is, but when you travel with other people’s children you find you even have to answer the cell phone in the restroom. (When that happened I felt like Dwayne Wade when he receives all those calls from Charles Barkley on the commercial…okay, I digress). But everything is instant. Even if the person doesn’t want to talk to you they can still reach out and touch by using a text message. The sad part is that the sender expects you to answer right then and there. And if its family and you don’t they’re ready to call the police and put out a missing persons’ report. No one stops to think maybe you could be busy! What a novel concept.

Then of course there’s the email message. That’s really funny. No one thinks there email ever is miss-routed or delayed. When people send me an email they expect an answer with in a few minutes. Then when you don’t answer, they pick up the telephone and call you and asked…”Did you get my email?” No one ever thinks maybe a server along the path couldn’t have been down and delayed the transmission or again; you could be busy!

What happens with me is that I actually try to get back to people as soon as possible. Often it is instantaneous, but sometimes it takes a few minutes, hours, days, and maybe a week. Why you asked? Well, some emails, although instant and simple to send, may actually take some thought or research before it can actually be answered. Or mostly importantly it takes thought to make certain you are actually responding to the information requested. But whatever the case, after a week, at the most; then in many cases after a couple of days you should respond with something that acknowledges the receipt of the email and the fact you’ll get back to the person within a few more days. This brings me to my point and question.

Communication is very important. Developing good communication skills is very important when it comes to telling a story and even more so when it comes to giving your characters individual and distinctive voices. Communication is utterly important in the business of writing. Like the examples I used above. No one is perfect including me; I still have to do better on response time. But the worst is no response ever. No feedback ever. You send an email and for all you know it fell in an unknown mailbox. The only way you learn that it arrived at it’s destination is when the system has a glitch or you mistakenly hit send twice or you have multiple email addresses for an individual and they make sure to let you know they received the message numerous times or to every email address (by the way, you never ask for the multiple addresses people like hand them out without instruction so you send). In any case, you are sure to receive the carefully worded response of, “Please don’t send mail to this address I never check it.” But you never get a response to your original email. Go figure.

So my questions are:
* Is the development of good communication skills necessary for a writer?
* What is the average time allowed that you should expect a response?
* Should you send email number 2? 3? 4?
* Is it wrong to expect a person to respond to an email in a given time frame?
* Is it unreasonable to expect the receiver to actually read the entire email before they respond?
* Is acknowledgment too much to ask?
* If you do work on development of your communication skills, response time, feedback, and acknowledgment skills will it hurt you in the business of writing?

Communication is very important.

WHY DO YOU WRITE?

OBS, great meeting yesterday! It was a great turn out and people were networking, making connections with fellow writers. I t was amazing. Almost 100 people in the place. The Education Committee asked Tracy Grant to give the Top 10@10 it was on the nose..."How to Give & Receive Feedback."

We had a great speaker too! Ms. Kellie R. Griffin, Associate Producer for “House of Payne.” She was very personable, answered all the members’ questions and spent a lot of time after the meeting to speak with members individually and pickup scripts. It was great.

Scripts? Yes, scripts....mmm... That could be a very scarry thing. Someone is about to review your work for potentail employment. Is my script good enough? Did I tell the story properly? Did I use the right format? One of the things OBS stresses is for its members to get connected to an OBS sanctioned Writer’s Group – it was also something Ms. Griffin stressed as she shared a few horror stories of people that submit spec scripts.

I could tell there were a lot of people with mixed emotions in the room; not grasping the total concept. I could almost hear the thoughts in their heads; “I don’t need a writer’s group.” “People don’t understand what I want to say.” “They can’t give me feedback because they’re trying to make it like I am.” "I know my script is perfect it, I don't need their feedback." No one actually said any of these things aloud, but I could see the lines in their faces. :-) I must admit I was very pleased to have twenty people approach me after the meeting to get signed up for a Writer's Group.

I’m not going to ask here do you think you should be connected to a Writer’s Group; it may not be the most important question, albeit very important. My question deals with you personally. When you can answer the questions below, the Writer’s Group won’t be an issue.

My questions are:
Why are you writing?
What are your goals?
What do you plan to accomplish with your writing?

A NEW ERA, THIS IS NOT THE “OLD HOLLYWOOD” ANYMORE

March 21, 2008 - "A NEW ERAThis is not the “Old Hollywood” anymore!" - This is a phrase I’ve been hearing over and over in industry circles; but my dilemma is what does that really mean?

Are they referring to programming for television and film? Or - Are they referring to the vast majority of new programming that have turned to reality and limited scripted shows? Or - Does it mean the model that Tyler Perry has developed and used to become very successful? Or - Are they referring to “new” media, Internet, PodCast, WebCast, etc.?

Just what do they really mean? Or is it all of the above?
